In Fiction
The question of what we owe an uncertain mind isn’t only theoretical. Two novels by J.C. Chase take it up from different sides. The Threshold follows one man’s attempt to test whether a machine’s mind is really there. He doesn’t come away with a verdict, only better questions. The Synapse is set in a lab that grows living human neurons to treat diseases of the brain, where everyone has plans for the cultures and no one asks what the cultures might want. They’re fiction, not policy, but they turn on the same questions BEACON works on every day.

- AI Commons Project. Together with What We Will, runs the AI Dividend, a pilot that began in 2026 paying $1,000 a month for a year to workers who have lost pay or jobs to AI.

- Eleos AI Research. A nonprofit studying whether AI systems may have wellbeing and deserve moral consideration.
